I love the fact that he's obviously ex-Yakuza (rubbed in your face at the start of nearly every chapter with the back tattoo) but then he never, ever resorts to solving anything by being a violent a-hole. There's even the chapter where he sprains his finger just trying to help someone falling. He handles most problems with his observation skill and being insistent on doing what's right.

So very much a redemption story.
