At the climax of volume 1 he stood up for Shiho.
Well, Ryoma already sees him as enemy, so there's no point of hiding it anymore. In that case he do what he must to protect Shiho.

At the epilogue of volume 1, both practically know their feeling to each other. They just don't formalize it because Shiho wants him to be sure of his own feeling. Right now Kotaro has the tendency to play "mob character" and act according to it. But after being openly close with Shiho, he has tendency to go the other extreme, to play as "Shiho's protagonist". She doesn't want him to act just according to a role because she hates how his sound change when doing that.

Ah right, there's still time when that power shows up. In later part, Kotaro sometime change his role. Not into mob character like now, but rather into "antagonist". Shiho hates the sound when that happens. Later he also realize because it risk corrupting his personality and he might take actions he would regret later.

So the "form change" does have some significance to it, i thought it was the usual chuuni stuff lol.

This chapter sums up perfectly why Shimosuki dislikes him. He's so entitled that he thinks, just because he is her childhood friend, he DESERVES her. Nevermind what she wants. Never mind her own feelings and agency. He merely sees her as a prize. Notice how Nakayama always treats her like an equal. Never puts her on a pedestal and kind of teases her.

Think about how differently they treat her, and ask yourself this: If you were her, would you want to get with such a pushy and self centered guy?

Okey sorry guys but I need to vent my anger a little. STFU! The MCs behavior fills me with rage!!! What is with these "I'm just a background character." types of dogs? This anger is based on my personality and it says that it is freaking pathetic to build your life around someone else like they are god and you are just shit that doesn't amount to anything. Why can't these MCs just go on in life living for them self? Sorry, If anyone has a recommendation for a manga with a character like this I would gladly appreciate it. I think what this story needs is a tanned, blonde haired faceless man to take all the girls in this story. Christ. The MC has made me very glad that I never grew up in or experienced the japanese school experience, it seems to have fried the authors brain or even worse people might actually think in these terms.

I was self conscious and lacking self esteem at ages 15 to 17 but holy hell the english school system at least didn’t make me bow down to a vaguely more attractive classmate because I spoke to someone he has no romantic tie too. Anyway hentai MC-kun needs to liberate these girls from these two failures of young boys.
