The old kind of spelling will call it Xiaomai but i am not very picky about this.
These are some of my knowledge about this dish.
The Xiao Mai literally means "Small Meat"
Xiao/shao/xiu is the pronunciation of the word "Small" in Chinese.
While "Mai" is "Meat" or "Minced Meat". That i am not sure.
It was called Small Meat because practically, it was made so that you can eat in one bite.
In my country, we do Shaomai too but the style is much different (No flour-wrap around and they are served with sauce) and not for appetite purpose anymore. Not to mention they are much bigger (up to 200% bigger).
