Huh, interesting. Wouldn't this just solve the problem of shipwrecked sailors not having enough fresh water that you usually see in media? There must be some sort of catch, because you'd think that every ship would just bring one of these.
@spurgleburgle The catch is the energy requirement to distill the water. It would require a significant amount of fuel to generate enough heat to do what they did here. Scale that out to 100 people and there's no way you could supply enough drinking water when out in the middle of the ocean. There just wouldn't be enough to burn.
It's a little different when you consider the original location where this pot was conceived. The lower boiling point makes the fuel issue less onerous.
