this chapter is particularly infamous in the japanese lupin fandom for its portrayal of a young lupin aside from the arc in the original series of a young (not as young as THIS verison, maybe young teen) lupin learning to evade trouble after his grandfather's death with only a book of thievery at his disposal over an actual inheritance (his dad and grampy never really liked him and the inheritance was rigged to favor his business partners)

a childhood friend of lupin had been played with to some degree in some interpretations of jigen, though it's widely accepted in stuff such as episode 0 and a brief chapter in the manga that jigen was hired to kill lupin, was outsmarted, and eventually joined his side, rather than being with him from the get-go. of course, lupin's childhood friend in this story isn't as lucky, and the final section has lupin pull the trigger on his friend, now enemy, as we are left with our imagination to fill in the blanks.
