IIRC, their thinking was that even without the Hero the humans would still be able to fight to a stalemate. The Hero is needed to push them back. That's something I've been wondering about. I know how THIS particular fight ends, and the general idea of where all of the 'heroes party' ends up...but aren't they the big lynchpin that's allowing humanity to make any actual ground against the demonic hordes? Without them constantly being a massive thorn in the demon's side, humanity seems like they're ripe for conquering. I'm not sure how the story ends (presuming the novelized version of events HAS ended at all) but it doesn't seem like it's any good if they really do just settle down in that village and stop caring about the outside world like they claim to want to.
The WN only goes up to LN volume 6 (of 11), and I've only read the WN so this is all from summaries, but the tl;dr
When Ruti stops acting as the Hero the world makes a new one - who shows up to Zoltan because Giddeon is still the Guide.
