I’m not even sure what she meant to do by spiking it. Poppy seeds to begin with are obviously not aphrodisiacs, so the closest thing they intended was to have them be slightly intoxicated and impaired with poppy opium.

Except poppy seed extract doesn’t contain opium, it’s just an high quality oil lmao. It’s extracted from a part separate from the part of the poppy seed that contains opium, and the process requires separating and removing the part and its opium from the seed.

In fact, the entire process is basically doing the exact opposite of harvesting opium lmao. The only reason it has trace amounts is because the process isn’t executed perfectly.

The author probably meant for her to, but poppy seed extract doesn’t contain significant amounts of opium. Like as in, it is literally made by removing the opium lmao. The only reason it contains trace opium is because the process isn’t perfect. But since she’s using properly made extract, she basically spiked her drink with a really fancy version of sunflower oil lmao. And I doubt she’s using an improperly made version, because if she was gonna use an improperly made, black market version just for the opium, then she probably would’ve just gotten actual poppy opium.

To go into more detail, seeds don’t contain opium, but they lie in a pod that has an internal coating. That internal coating contains opium. To make seed extract, you have to take out the seed and separate it from the pod and its coating and clean off the coating so that you can actually extract the contents without contaminating and ruining the extract. The only way to get opium in extract is by royally fking up this process and the extract, at which point it’s not extract.
