Yeah. It doesn't seem very sanitary for everybody to be dipping their fingers in it.
I know in the viking age people from my country used to do something like that, pass a big bowl of water around the table before a meal, and everybody would wash their hands, face, rinse their mouth and spit (back into the bowl) and also blow snot into the bowl.
The chieftain got to be the first guy to do it, and then it went around the table according to rank.
I'm glad we stopped doing that.
