They missed a reference.

Venus-san's initial pose is a reference to the sculpture Venus de' Medici: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_de'_Medici

Yeah, I have no idea why there is an apostrophe, but every spelling of it has it with an apostrophe after the "de", and a space between it and "Medici".

EDIT: Also, van Gogh offering flowers in exchange for someone's ear is hilarious.

@Darkion it's Italian, he uses lots of words in Italian from time to time like "cazzo!" which also means shit or fuck

I will never understand abstract art.

@Darkion Same meaning but it's Italian. You will know some Italian cuss words just by playing Assassin's Creed 2.

@Wordsmith the apostrophe marks a contraction; the full form would be "dei Medici" but no one pronounces that first "i".

@Wordsmith
No, it just her signature recurring pose, from Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus".

Also it's "de' Medici" because it's an elision from "dei Medici", meaning "of Medici", "from the Medici family".
In italian an elision should (must) be marked with an apostrophe.

@Darkion
Merda = Shit
Cazzo = Fuck

@Wordsmith i knew that there was something odd with that pose! thanks man!

@Darcow but, but that kills the peepee, because teeth and munching...

@kenrms there are some abstract art that is cool, like geometric abstraction (some which are quite mesmerising, and others that look incredibly generic and seem to be made solely to adorn a wall because it matches with the floor and ceiling), the works of Hilma af Klint, cubism (which is more like surrealism than abstract), and then there other abstract works and performance art that just seem like scams to me, i have seen some installations that even come with an essay attached explaining the art piece, as if the author knew that without the justification the people wont get it, and i am not talking about conceptualism, but just abstract art or performance pieces that come with a guide book attached telling the observer why what they are watching it is art, that's just the worst.

@Garrett
No, it's a reference to the statue.
In the Birth of Venus, she's looking forward with her head tilted to the left (her right), is covering only her right breast, and is covering her crotch with her hair.

In both this and Venus de' Medici, she is looking to her left, covering both breasts, and not covering her crotch with her hair.

Also, her fingers more closely match the Venus de' Medici (gap between right pinky finger and other fingers, gap between left middle and ring fingers) than the Birth of Venus, though the match isn't perfect.

As an addendum, I have now used the word crotch on this site three more times than I am comfortable with, and spent way too much time studying a the fingers on a statue.

Also, I knew it was a reference to the family, I was just wondering why there was a seemingly needless apostrophe (I'm more familiar with French than Italian, and in French it would be "de")
Though thank you for explaining it to me, I was unaware that it was short for "dei"

@squerl
Thanks for explaining it to me.
