nah the mom being too autistic to ever show her child any affection or care doesn't get a pass from me.
hell imagine choosing the bear over your own kid lmao, I wouldn't have blamed the daughter if she'd ended the chapter by burning the book.

Fuck
This

She was not an emotionally-abusive mother who ran away from her parenting duties, she was just shy and she even had this cute little diary where she was writing about her daughter - is that supposed to be my takeaway?

I feel like there are ways to do this character trait and story better. It just felt like she was pointing out her flaws while doing nothing about them. Sure she's reconciled (sorta) but it feels like it's a case of "it's fine now because the author says so". Hell, I feel like the Dad could have said something (but then again it's clear he's basically a non-entity for this story, probably for the sake of making sure someone was taking care of her when her mum left)

Bears dude's great though, looks like a Disney character

edit: I don't think the "cold parent is secretly caring" plot line is exclusive to Japanese media

All that spiel about coexistence yet she can't coexist with her own fucking kid. Yeah sure, I'm too scared to talk to my own daughter, instead I will leave her alone with my half-dead husband and go hang out with, erm, a fucking bear.

Incredibly disappointing chapter in what is otherwise an amazing series. Somehow I feel like this is related to the author's personal life because of the nonsensical premise and resolution. Ah well, I'll just pretend this chapter never existed.

Yeah... No for me. Felt forced.
This kind of story genuinely pisses me off sometimes and this is one of it. I get the mother's passion and even her disability to communicate properly but acting emotionally absent to your child, without even trying to reach out to her in her whole life, not even before dying just because she doesn't need you anymore is just an asshole move. Her way of loving her child is just... bad.

I agree with everyone in this comment. Not everyone is a good parent, but they try. She didn't even try at all but already decided she would never be good at it. What's a scholar when you can't even learn the most important thing? At least then don't have a child if you already know you won't be able to take care of them. "She doesn't need me anymore." Sorry, I don't think she ever needed you at all. This one is a really bad chapter trying to make us sympathize with the mother.
