I appreciate what it's trying to do, but the writing is trite and obvious, and the mc is annoying.

I remember a long time ago reading a one-shot about a magician that uses a body puppetry spell to carry their would-be hero party all the way back to their homes and families, and later turns it into a vocation. It was an incredibly powerful read, and this gives me tinges of that same energy.
