Interesting that magic the gathering was mentioned because it's fairly unpopular compared to other card games in Japan because card games is largely seen as a kids game. Not to mention that it's intensely western, to the point where wizards of the coast have japan exclusive cards that were redrawn to have an anime aesthetic

Sea Monkeys are just brine shrimp, so not a big deal... though I can see where they would be totally confused by the name.

If you've seen his other series, the author very obviously loves intensely western American stuff (he's a reverse weaboo), so MTG is right in his wheelhouse.
