I think you should think about it. Isn't this foreshadowing that the humans are actually the bad guys? If that were the case, it would allow the main character to eventually come around to fully loving and supporting his wife and family without becoming a bad guy (which I think is the most obvious direction for this plot to go anyway).
In the first place, dragons aren't monsters in this setting, they're people. Imagine if there were a country in real life that was at war with Italy, and they had a group called the "Italian Slayers" that would pay you a bounty for hunting Italian children and civilians. That would be extremely evil, right?
