How is it stupid to want to hang to something that you love? Did people forget that beside her everything and everyone has fail him miserably. Even the teacher that love him, is not right in the head.

His wife is the herald of the end, it's probably god way to punish the angels which failed to protect people like him. No one suffer in her hand and everyone died in a snap with no pain while the angel die slowly burning out in anguish.

It's not rocket science to figure out that he will never let her go no matter what happen bc she is his only light and with everyone gone, there is no one for him to turn his back to.

In addition to what @MRain said upthread, you need remember that Michiru is young enough to think mop sword + bucket helmet = cool and effective post-apocalypse survival gear. And according to Nozomi, his mind is being magically controlled by Hikari.
