It's different. One is a truly fleshed out story with engaging characters with various motivations, the other is just a tournament arc. =/

I also think the changes in Jack's character in this spinoff make him more interesting to me than his characterizations in the main story. Saying this as a huge Jack fan even before reading this spinoff btw.
