I like a passionate lead that can push through pessimism with shounen bullshit “but even so” speeches. But it definitely has more weight if the lead also fought through his/her own pessimism before. Our siren hasn’t gone though such a crisis yet, but given the tone and pacing I suspect it will be in the story’s future.
