Thank you so much for the update!!
I'm super happy that Shiori and Kai are going strong as a couple. On the other hand, A-kun don't gooooo, he's just really stepping away for the mother to come in but he doesn't realize that he's too important both for ma-chan and shiori.

Oh, so she didn't leave with some fuckboy, their mother left her two daughters just because she didn't like the idea of raising a kid from another marriage (with a woman who died).
And I wondered how the fuck the husband got all 3 of them under his care. She abandoned them, just like that.
Seriously, fuck her.

@thaeril Looking at the flashback, she seems to be saying she wants to take the girls with her and the dad is saying the "terms of the contract" means she can't. I would even say the scene suggests that the dad kicked her out, rather than her deciding to leave. Mind you, it sounds like she was treating A-chan like crap and that's why the dad kicked her out, which is a reasonable reason as far as it goes--but basically it seems like the dad had a fixation on making a happy family for A-chan so he set it up so she couldn't take the kids if anything happened, which is kind of, um . . . I can see the motivation, but it's a bit over the top.
But it seems to me like what we've got establishes that she didn't want to leave her daughters and was not given a choice.

Yeah, but that was when she came back years later after the divorce. The contract they mention is probably a divorce deal and there is no way a father gets all kids (including one completely unrelated to him) under his care without mother agreeing to it. It's nearly impossible, unless she was batshit crazy and had to be put in some facility...
If she really wanted to keep her kids, she would at least get Shiori under her care. She basically abandoned them because she hated Akio and then came back after having second-thoughts but the dad didn't even let her it.

@thaeril I was assuming it was a pre-nup, which she didn't worry about too much at the time because she had no plans for divorce. Seems like he didn't spring Akio on her until after they were married--I think even after she had Ma with him.

Yes, Akio came later, after his first wife died and after he had Ma with Shiori's mom.
Tbh, she's an airhead, probably not very smart either - I wouldn't be surprised if she would just leave if the dad would say "you can leave if you hate Akio, but kids will stay with me" and since she was very young, she didn't care and didn't think of consequences. Also, he was a lawyer and as far we know she was jobless without any significant education. All of this, pieced together, kind of explains why she let go of her children so easily.
Let's not forget that both Ma and Shiori wanted nothing to do with her when she came back and preferred to stay with the dad, which suggests that she indeed abandoned them.

Basically, she was very young and stupid so she made terrible mistake while being controlled by her emotions (towards Akio). Of course, most of this are assumptions based of what we know so far (flashbacks and her current, apologetic behaviour which suggests that it was her fault).

@thaeril Apologetic behaviour has little to do with whose fault things are. It has to do with whether you're the kind of person who apologizes. Self-righteous assholes never apologize no matter how bad a thing they did; apologetic people and socially-oriented nice people apologize when stuff goes down even if it was totally other people's fault. Only a few people apologize when it's their fault but refuse to when it isn't (I myself try to be in this group, although I don't know how successful I am). This seems to be all the more true of Japanese people; acting apologetic about stuff that isn't your fault in Japan seems to just be a sign that you're properly socialized, Japanese style. In fact, while I wouldn't use it as a guide, I tend to suspect that if one person is being apologetic and the other isn't, the one who isn't being apologetic is more likely to be at fault because they're probably an asshole and assholes are just in general more likely to be at fault.

I see a lot of hate for the mom but I feel like Akios dad is also a bad person. For one, slapping a child for saying something a child would say, especially in the wake of a pretty earthshattering revelation is shitty. He also has no right to keep all the kids, since one of them literally isn't even his. Idk something about him is super suspicious and I suspect Shiori 1 becoming a gyaru who sleeps around is largely due to the father than anything else

The biggest shock here is how no one gave two shits about how Maho felt about any of this - she's the one who's been most traumatized by any of this to begin with. In fact I felt it was unbelievably insensitive of Akio to even invite her to their house without getting her consent first. I'm genuinely surprised no one's brought that up so far here in the comments section

Straight up told the guy that raised her kids that she hated him and he didn't say shit. Japan is fucking silly.
