I am always amazed at the ability a writer has of surfacing that much empathy towards a character archetype that is, in its core, unrelatable to most.

For me it's, I think, like when one finally wonders: "Hey, why the heck are paparazzi are still a thing nowadays?"
I don't get people stalking me because I did something worthy of popular praise (since I didn't), but I have supposedly a right to my privacy anyway.
Most actors and celebrities get people stalking them because of something they did (be it worthy or not of praise), but they have a mostly useless right to their privacy anyway.

Now, if we just change the topic from privacy to... I don't know... non-two-face-ism (in Skip and Loafer), the discussion might not translate completely, but the wonder remains after we, for some reason, wear this someone else's shoes: why can't they also have that? Objectively?

Thank you for coming to my TEDtalk. Just a random enormous thought that I felt like sharing.

I guess it can be a problem to be too attractive
Nah. It's common trope in manga\anime, but IRL pretty people are really fond of their own attractiveness and would never trade it for plain look. All this "Oh, i'm so pretty\handsome and that's why I'm so lonely. I have no genuine friends" bullshit happens only in anime. This manga is awesome, but it has it share of manga clichés. It handles them pretty good though, so no real complains.

Hard disagree. Physically attractive people get objectified way more often than "plain people". And others dismiss their issues or call them "fond of their own attractiveness" like you did. It's not a common thing of course because super attractive people are rare, but it absolutely happens.

I yet to meet or heard about attractive person who suffers from from their attractiveness and wants to become plain. Have you? Have you ever hear about plastic surgery to make someone pretty uglier? I've never heard about beautiful and LONELY girl. Let alone school girl. I'm sure such people do actually exist, but they definitely super rare.
But this is common trope in anime and less common in movies and books. Yeah, pretty people can experience some unwanted attention, but usually it's not big deal unless they are celebrities of some sort.

You might just not know a lot of girls then. Lonely but attractive women is def something I've seen before. Sure, not to the level of mess that happens to celebrities, but Yuzu's situation?? Common as hell. Where girls treat them like shit because of jealousy or guys treat them like a piece of meat. Life is better as an attractive person yes, but people are trash. No matter how good you have it, there's always ways other human beings can make it shitty for you.

Maaaaaaan. What a shitty dude. Oh well I dont have to ask her out and get rejected if i just make it a SECRET PLAN.

Also for anyone wondering: Yes absolutely people disliking how their looks make people treat them is a thing. If you just let yourself form an idea of "attractive people" you feel bitter about, I think that's kind of lonely.

peak character writing, yuzu could easily come off as bratty if not written with care and empathy but this manga makes it so easy to understand her struggles. i think this is definitely something that happens with young women, maybe they are not as aware of their situation like yuzu is, but they know that they're treated differently and a lot of times insincerely
