This is cool and all but he still has no aim in life.
I can see that the reader is being lead to think that he’s missing out on a romantic connection because his two childhood friends are going off into the sunset together without him but we don't have any proof that he actually cares about that though.
Presumably he’ll use this power for something that impresses the female CHF, but his other friend isn’t even a bad guy (from what we can see so far), so is it just childish jealousy that will drive him in the end? If so, lame.
probably but it doesn't necessarily have to be all a romantic matter. I think the feeling of having now aim in life is a big enough conflict to deal with without relationship drama, especially when you watch your friends chase their dreams.
That said, it's not like there isn't a way to deal with that feeling. Not everyone can start from DECIDING what to do and then PERSUING it. Some of us have to pursue and then decide. Just move forward with what you can and take the opportunities and experiences you get along the way until you naturally settle into something. If you're unsatisfied, then maybe you've been ignoring opportunities. That's journey enough to make a good story. I know it's supposed to be so that he shares that sense of malaise and listlessness that a lot of us are feeling but that feeling comes from lacking such an obvious call to destiny like he's getting here. The friends seem to have their direction only because they paid attention when they got their call. They saw/experienced something and realized, "yeah, this is something I can do to give my life meaning, to have an impact." Meanwhile, he got these powerups thrown into his backyard and transformed into a monster basically and he's like, "hmmm, I wonder what I'll become in the future...maybe a chef...nawww."
