So he's been a target by the cult since I assume those murder cases he's working on were theirs. His daughter was speaking the cult's words. He was already too late and even if he did got home earlier there'd still be a tragedy on his family.

it's def a societal issue that one or both parents would be too busy for a kid (if anything is surprising that school hours aren't even longer with some places with like a '9-5' workplace being common and some schools letting out earlier than that) but its possible that he suddenly also got more busy, promotion aside [tho other than going outta your way to spend time together/make memories/weekend activities i imagine more ppl have memories of their classes/friends than relatives]
