Having Eel Potato lose to Battle Chimney, then introducing Battle Chimney as a rival who isn’t actually a love rival, maybe another character or two gets introduced as the chapters progress and build up to other events and ultimately the next year’s competition. By having time progress, we can also get school events like sports and culture festivals, or considerations about future careers, or even joining a club (run by Battle Chimney). If the author is willing and able to continue the story, I think there’s enough threads of story to pull on. But the pacing of the last few chapters hints at the axe.
