Not quite a failure, but it was partially the parents' fault she got so bad. No one is perfect, indeed. Makes it more real. Quite often, characters feel bad for things that aren't actually bad, which, while also realistic since a lot of people have a much worse opinion of themselves than they should, it often comes off as hollow if they don't have the troubles to back it up.
