As heartwarming as it may seem, I feel like the tail end of high school isn't old enough to recognise the damage you got from parent(s) not being there. It took me several years of living away from my father to realise how much of an abuser he was, and that was on top of the emotional neglect. Because of that I tend to be much more critical of plotlines in the vein of "you've never been present in my life but I know you're doing important work and love me so all's good."
