Barbarians - This is a term used for people not of the central plains. There is a bit of negative connotation given to the term as they were seen as less developed.

Even if it requires forceful measures: She actually says 'thunderclap methods' which basically translates into forceful measures.

Likely one of my favorite chapters yet. They still aren't there, but they are moving in the direction towards my own beliefs on free will.

Everytime I meet someone named Barbara, I can only think about how horrible their parents are. Looking up the name in a name dictionary yields results saying it means, "stranger." The name obviously comes from barbarian, which was a derogatory term spawned by the Romans for the armies attacking them from the north. They mocked their language by saying the sounded like, "bar bar bar."

Fun chapter. Did the lady ask the old man to murder or otherwise neutralize the governor of Ningzhou? Because it certainly felt like that's what she was implying.

Not necessarily bad parent. There are reason why Barbara and Barbie are mainstream name.

Barbara and similar name can be a source of pride. Especially when you remember that both Greek and Roman are subjuguated and conquered by what they thought as "Barbarian".

Another thing is that "Barbarian" and "Hellenic" has different expectation of women. Women in ancient "barbarian" society is more empowered and independent than their "Hellenic" counterpart. Barbara could be a great name to be given to a daughter, if the parents hope their daughter to be an independent and powerful woman.

Another reason there are some great/holy person that the parent want to honor by naming their daughter like that person. Example: Saint Barbara.

The "author is dead," I suppose. Meanings can change. My point of view is tainted, as the Barbaras I've met, are not pleasant to interact with. I suppose I'd also be guilty of bad naming, as a shortlist for possible daughter names for me would include Cassandra.

If Barbara is seen in a positive manner, it may be the only thing I've heard of that has changed from a negative to a positive meaning with the change. All I can think of are positive things that turned negative over the ages. Possible selective attention with that though.

This is so wrong. There is no such thing as a "barbarian" society because barbarians were all those civilizations that didn't speak latin and in many of those tribes, women were absolutely not empowered and even less independent
