If you haven't noticed, he's already tried talking to her. Even now in the story, the man's sat down and asked what the problem is, apologized, and tried to get to the bottom of the issue; He's met with hysterical shouting, and shattered glass to the face. This isn't "avoidant behavior", this is "My wife literally attacks me and shuts down when I approach her" behavior. The lack of communication is squarely the fault of the woman who, in her own words, finds it pointless to talk to him about literally anything. Until she fucks up, of course; then it's all his fault for not doing all the people stuff she tells him not to do.

You can't deal with an issue when one party's response is hysterics and isolation.

I can only truly speak for myself, but perhaps some of us knew/know people like the mother in real life, and can personally attest to how there's no reaching or salvaging anything worthwhile from them.

Abusive, hateful people with zero self awareness are unfortunately very real and it's normal human behavior to have a viscerally negative reaction to accurate depictions of them in fiction. Especially if someone's formative experiences involve being gaslit and abused by someone like this mother character.

This "mother" character is a much more mature, and likeable version of that thing that gave birth to me. Nobody really understands "evil" anymore, and think that these... individuals are just poor, broken people who need attention and understanding. In reality, they're so putrid, they don't know what "pristine" is; so sick, they know what "healthy" is. And more importantly, they don't care.

Personally I hate the fact that the author is trying to redeem her or make us try and simplifies with her because of her past.
I'm sorry but if she hasn't tried to fix her marriage or herself after this many years, then there is no fixing her.
If she had some super powers I bet she would be an amazing super villain, she would probably think of herself as the hero and blame everyone else and the world for everything she had done.

I can somewhat understand why mr father hasnt filed a divorce yet. Probably still feeling the guilt. But I dont understand why mrs mother hasnt filed one. She doesn't have any reason to keep the marriage, she doesnt love him anymore, she doesnt want her daughter to have a father daughter relationship. The only reason I can think of is shes only keeping the marriage for mr fathers money.

I don't know if it's true - but I've read there are many marriages in Japan that are like this - it's part of the triad between the lost generation, and the trend for capitalistic societies to have a declining birth rate - but it's a part of why Japan is having such a problem with young people getting married and having kids (again what I read).

That is once kids happen - the relationship kind of changes to this state - albeit with less drama.

Crazy what a few differences in cultural norms can do.

Yeah. I was defending the mother character because she had a moment of self-reflection, which sets her apart from abusers I've had the displeasure of making contact with in my life.

You don't seem to understand that abusers aren't demonic beings who wake up every day like "GOLLY GEE, I CAN'T WAIT TO BEAT MY KIDS TODAY". They're still technically Human, and they do have introspective moments, however rare they may be. It just doesn't go well. Besides, it's not like she just now came to the realization that slapping your kids is bad, and unpleasant. She knew it from the start, told him to do it, then turned around and got happy that he didn't. She knew full well what a horrid thing it is to do to a child, she just insisted he do it. And if he had, you know she'd be throwing yet more glass at him for listening.
