It's hard being a fan of this manga. I want to see the ending, but I'm going to miss these characters so much. The other manga by the author doesn't hit me as hard as this one. Hell, this is one of my favorite rom-com now.

I know this is pretty late to be critical of the core conceit of this manga but I don't like the "having to beat her to confess" angle. Like what does that have to do with liking someone, does he have to be better than her to feel like his feelings are worthy? If she confessed would he shoot her down because it wasn't on his terms? Isn't that just putting his feelings above hers then and honestly why can't one of the reasons to confess just be that she's really good at shogi, you don't have to better then her at everything to prove your worthiness if she already likes you. . .
😑 Idk, it's obviously just getting frustrating how stubborn he is about this self-imposed hurdle. I hope he never beats her at this point so he has to grow up a bit before they get together

I think the idea is ok in the beginning to have the confidence to ask someone out but it’s been going on for way too long. I feel like confessions need to happen around 100 chapters or it can drag.

The only part that's bothered me so far is the Rin (i think that's her name) stuff. I dunno. Seemed weird and mean.

But yeah, at this point, I'm just chilling along for the ride. Have been for a year+, I don't expect this volume or the next to have a confession, just gonna appreciate it when it comes

You asked and answered your own question. She was looking to convince him to give up his stupid ass decision to only confess after beating her in shogi. But gave up after realising how he is giving his all by seeing those notes.

In an ideal world, Urushi would beat his ass so bad he would be feel like Rin. Then decide his motivation is a stupid ass one and if he truly wanted to make senpai happy, he would just confess his love and date her.

If this wasn't a Yamamoto slice of life manga, what you said last is what would realistically happen. But the MC's gonna win because "conviction" and whatnot.
