Shogi has more pieces than chess and is played on a 9x9 board while chess is on an 8x8. Shogi has 20 pieces per side while chess has 16. A six piece handicap means she's only got 14 pieces at the start vs his 20. It's a huge advantage for him. The fact that she was originally beating him with that handicap shows just how much better at the game she is than him. But if he's improving he may beat her in an even fight before they both graduate.

So six piece handicap means she played 六枚落ち roku-mai ochi - meaning she was without rook, bishop, both lances, both knights
So basically if he lost then it was pretty sad (although handicaps go all the way to ten piece handicaps, loosing rook, bishop, both lances, both knights, both silvers, both golds - and even to the showoff ones of "king only", either with three pawns on hand, or even without pawns.. although in the last case I feel the game will probably be about how long can the king survive)

Going up to four piece handicap 四枚落ち yon-mai ochi - gives her back the knights.
