The fact that this is a double-translation seems more problematic that usual—for instance what is meant by "the old Tomie" becomes more suspect.

I think there's actually not enough information here to know what's going on and why it matters in the first place though? Some guys get possessed, end of story?

Yeh, not to mention Tomie never gets old and even if some weirder incarnation of Tomie did, I bet the stress of getting older would cause her to split and regenerate as usual.

1. The fact that Souichi did get possessed by usual symptoms confirms that old Tomie is REAL

2. You guys have forgotten the last few chapters of Tomie where they were experimenting, injecting babies of Tomie's blood, and those babies does grow old, if they didn't get cut up, especially the last chapter (even tho they failed) it shows it is possible, obviously this old Tomie is not the one who escaped in the main story
