Because he's supposed to be hiding it most of the time in the first place. Whipping that out just now wasn't in the author's grand designs for its plot relevance. That whole test was apparently to more properly fuse his spider leg thing with him, whatever effects that actually has besides the equivalent of soul binding and removing the ability to discard items in a game would.
