It’s OK, Frieren said she didn’t remember about a week’s worth of time after touching the monument, so that puts a hard cap in-world on how much time she can spend on this flashback arc. We should be back to the regular gang before long.
How does interesting stuff always get axed but this neuro divergent sleep aid is on chapter 111
Well I guess if we went by "stuff happening" this is more like chapter 30
Honestly feel like that's an insanely lazy plot device. This story was never even going anywhere as it is, but it somehow managed to walk backwards completely.
I'm afraid to say, that if after a hundred chapters you can't still grasp what the manga is about, then maybe it is not for you. I on the other hand have been loving it.
Supposedly Frieren is going to a place where she can communicate with the deceased to ask Himmel something. If this was the Frieren of the first chapters, she'd just ask Himmel now and her journey would end; However, she does not even entertain that possibility. And that is because Frieren has been growing trough this journey, and that is what the story is about, she understanding humans more and changing despite being an apathic elf.
I can imagine the story ending with Frieren not even asking Himmel anything, because by then, she'd understand what he meant, and that doesn't mean her journey was pointless, quite the opposite in fact, since it was trough this journey that she finally understood him.

I haven't been reading the last 3 chapters since this new arc started, so I'll take your word for it.
And I think you read into what I wrote a tad off; I did not mean to say that "the journey itself was always pointless", but the literal road they were walking on had no direction. It's an episodic tale, where they "learn something new every chapter or so", sort of thing.
And personally, at the end of the previous arc, I found "going back to the past" to be such a hated trope, I gave it no further thought. Even after having read what you wrote, I still don't care for it.
I want the journey to always be set with one's eyes forward. Introspection is fine, but almost quite literally being zapped into the past, to relieve days of old, does not sit well with me at all.
I can understand why you'd enjoy it, and I liked the comparison you made with "old Frieren" and "new Frieren", but personally these sort of things rarely ever click for me.
