The hero party Himmel leads is strong but nowhere close to the strongest.
Strongest hero: The Hero of the south
Strongest mage: Serie the living grimmoire. Serie seemed to be tied with the demon king or the demon king was even stronger than her.

Not strongest mage but still is stronger than Frieren:
-Qual, 1 of 7 sages of destruction. The guy was actually defeated by collective efforts of humanity into countering killing magic.
-Immortal Bose, 1 of 7 sages of destruction.

Frieren herself had lost in battle 11 times, Four of them were Demon, Qual included, one was an elf, and the remaining six were humans.

So no, she's very very far from the strongest mage in the series.

Just realized that Qual is not a sage of destruction, he was called the Elder Sage of Corruption back in chapter 5.
Same with Omniscient Schlacht, both of them are pretty high-up in the Demon Army's ranking but they're not the "Sages of Destruction"

ye I forgot to edit that comment of mine. He wasn't 1 of 7 sages, but had other title.

The thing that I want to know is if Frieren can see Serie's instability. I have to imagine she can. After all, she learned it from Flamme who learned it from Serie. Unfortunately it is never addressed directly and I sadly suspect it never will be.

Serie's older than Frieren, yet Frieren's hidden mana is apparently more or less the same as the mana Serie's openly displaying, so I feel like it'd be weird if Frieren didn't suspect that was the real deal even if she wasn't seeing instability.

So the instability would imply that Serie is concealing her true power, right? Meaning that Frieren really isn't the strongest character in the series like I initially thought which does make sense. I'm also a fan of the black comedy in this manga for sure. edit: i mean it's not really black comedy, it just can be oddly funny for a non-comedic series.
I believe what you're thinking of is "dry" comedy or dry humor.

Serie: "hoooo. That's amazing, you can see the instability in my mana at first glance."
Fern: "... Na, I meant I just see a crazy elf."

Even if she could, it's not really impressive for her to be able to see it. It's not impressive for a college student to do college-level math, but it would be extremely impressive for a toddler to do it. All humans are children to an elf.
Frieren is a 1200+ year old elf who has been a mage for 1000+ of them, and that's literally her specialty. She's better at hiding her mana than anyone else, ever.
That old guy has been doing magic for 50+ years, and he noticed Frieren was hiding her mana. That's very impressive because if he was an elf, he would be able to notice Serie's mana instability in maybe another 150-350 years. He had a ton of potential and not enough lifespan to use it.
Fern has been doing magic for like 12 years and she can already easily see what that guy couldn't. So her potential is far greater.

In fact, Frieren probably did notice. And she knew Fern would also notice, and that Serie would be impressed by that.

11 times by “mages who stronger than her” mind you, not counted those who she considered weaker.
This was never mean to be the story about the strongest, it’s about the slightly above average, insignificant who archived the significant by luck and effort, while having fun doing it
Actually she says that she lost 11 times to "mages with less mana" than her. So that's not counting the unknown amount of times she lost to someone with more mana or potentially non-mages.

"It's frieren's fault so many of the examinees failed"

Because Sense decided to go into the dungeon too instead of waiting outside, her clone took out 4 people. She could've just dealt with her own clone to make it more fair, but said that "being a first-class mage means dealing with adversity." Frieren's clone took out literally nobody. This hag's just salty and doesn't want to pass Frieren. Stfu
