We don't need the novels for two reasons. One, this specifically said it's diverging away from the novel story with stuff happening here so why would the novel help? Two, and perhaps more importantly, it actually states the exact level he's at right in the chapter.

He's in the final realm mortals have any concept of, the realm that happens so rarely it's often considered a legend with no hard proof it even exists. Many murim related stories never bother with anything above this realm at all. The ones that do are stepping into territory that's more similar to the Chinese cultivation stories we see most often nowadays with immortal cultivators that would be leaving their starting world to continue advancing.

For further reference, one of the ones that does go past this stage has a thing on its wiki about that here. Past this level in that series, people are pretty becoming actual gods and could face restrictions on their powers for interfering with the mortal world. Which again, is very much a parallel to the xianxia type stories like Apotheosis or Martial Peak types of things, where the lower worlds just can't handle the amount of power characters in it have achieved in higher worlds.
