Such mixed feelings.
On the one hand, it's always nice to have a black person show up in an asian comic without being an obvious stereotype, character-wise.
On the other hand the semi-blackface portrayal in art is mortifying. (I assume this is inherited from Japan wherein manga inherited it from the US in a previous era and just still hasn't shook it off).
And the protagonist's reaction is pretty damn racist, of course, but I can't quite get a handle on whether or not the author is fully aware of that or not.
