it's not that uncommon to have hobbies you like doing but might feel a bit ashamed of when encountering people you know in different kind of context, or who know a different kind of you

I bet for her these two sides of wanting to do something you like but being afraid of being caught in it are a lot stronger due to her situation and mental instability, which typically leads to "overshooting both ways", like convincing yourself to go practice the hobby in somewhat public but then having a breakdown as the obvious happens

not to say that she couldn't be naïve and a bit dumb as well though - she does seem a bit doesn't she - but I'll hold out on passing the judgment on those for now while it feels already pretty in-character without

in other news, my understanding was that the short hiatus was due to health issues? I hope the mangaka is doing better now

It's a public event, yes, but her usual associates are like her: wives of powerful people. She wouldn't meet any of them at this festival.

Additionally, we know that her husband, Donovan, is an intensely private person. That's the whole point of Loid's mission: the academy is one of the few places that Donovan shows himself. He may very well ensure that his entire family keeps a similar level of privacy, micromanaging their lives to do so. This would very much explain the trauma, and lines up with how he would be displeased with Melinda bringing Damien to this festival. This is all to say that I doubt the common people even know what Melinda looks like to be able to recognize her.

I'm hoping the next chapter covers Loid's session with Melinda. So much potential for story revelations.

Me and You both. Really hoping to see the whole Desmond Family pay off as progress to the main plot.

After all, this whole operation is literally just to establish a connection to the head of the family while keeping taps on his intentions regarding the war between the 2 nations.

So learning that he is unreadable essentially should be a great progress, especially with how the organisation would progress forward once they learn that their plan is not possible to begin with!

That and I do want to see whatever nightmares the mother went through so she is afraid of showing affection to her sons.
