It does seem awfully on the nose that Desmond was thinking what amounts to "Gee, I sure wish I could read minds so I could understand this dude. That sure would be convenient, oh well!" like he was putting on a show. On the other hand, he did start randomly thinking about his research which if Anya hadn't been interrupted by Yor would have been (assumedly) pretty confidential information so I'm not entirely convinced.
Maybe he was thinking about telepathy because his research does involve that but he himself was a failed test subject (maybe he started by experimenting on himself first which is why he has the scar). It could just be that he's ridiculously autistic and everyone else just interprets that as weird and off putting because they don't know any better so he wishes he could read people's minds since he has trouble reading body language or between the lines of people's words. Could be any number of things really, hopefully the story starts leaning more into developing him as an actual character instead of just having him be this nebulous MacGuffin.
