I suspected they probably were proper lock picks, but couldn't resist, given that in the frame he used them they looked very much like a pair of metal chopsticks that I own.
The impression I'd gotten over the years was along the lines of what you related; given the proper tools and training, standard flat key locks are not difficult to get through rapidly without damaging them.
Some of the other style locks would be more difficult, but they also cost a lot more to purchase and install, so you don't come across them in everyday use.
I remember the Mythbusters episode where they demonstrated just how easy it is to bypass a fingerprint scanner on a PC if you can obtain a clean print from the relevant finger and do just a little work to clean up the image you produce from it.
I'd also gotten the impression that this was an area where the manufacturers did recognize that the only use for these tools was to circumvent security, so were a tad careful concerning who they sold to, for a variety of reasons.
