Can we do something about getting more visitors to MD to sign up ? Right now it a pathetic 1 in 5. Is MD too scary a site because it's on the edge of legit and pirate ?

Currently in the forums, 411 members, 1991 guests. So that's closer to 1 in 6 right now, though I would guess that number fluctuates a good bit.
(Doesn't look like the home page has a counter.)

Using the forums for number of readers that have an account will only get you a wildly inaccurate number. This is two fold, in order to be included in the count a user has to be actively browsing the forum and second they have to not enable certain settings for their account.
