This is a pretty damn good gag manga of a certain vintage. The comedy is outrageous and doesn't sweat realism. Sometimes the gags get a bit repetitive, some chapters are a bit "phoned in", but overall it has a lot of energy and fun. Beware, though--it was never completed and ends abruptly in the middle.

Thank you for the warning. And as it is an older manga it won't be suddenly continued again. I'm probably still going to read it nonetheless but at a slower pace

I dunno if I'm gonna follow it but from the first two chapters I've read, this manga kinda give a Dr. Slump vibes, at least about how characters are joking and that father that remind me of Senbei.

The manga was completed, but after 27 years with the 2009 edition and at the hands of shokakugan, the first editions were from shueisha in Jump Comics but the manga went into hiatus for a long time.

I wouldn't call hibari a crossdresser like the tags say, she is trans

Yeah, any way I look at it, Hibari is clearly a trans woman. At no point (in my memory) has she referred to herself as a man, and she was the same way even as a kid.

I feel a bit down since I really liked the comedy in this one. Unlike other “crossdressing” manga, Hibari actually wants to be identified as a girl and this being from around the 80s would mean that the LGBTQ+ community would barely have any sort of recognition/acceptance especially in Japan.

On to the animated series I guess...

My recommendation would be to read “Ototsuku/I turned my childhood friend into a girl” since it also features a main character who explores their feelings and how they would want to identify themselves as.

Man, I really wish this series wasn't just about a trans girl being mistreated by everyone around her... I love hibari's character so much, she deserves better!

I will reread it again, now that it will have an official english manga release.
I've been a fan of Hibari-kun since 2018, and I hope that maybe this release will make Hibari-kun more famous and more people will make fanart and talk about Hibari.
