What's missing is the part where he went house hunting and coincidentally found a house where a stalk of Silver Heart Grass is barely growing.
He immediately leased the house and became neighbors with a beauty nextdoor who is also leasing the same house (basically a 2 apartment house that is split in the middle and has 2 entrances)
And thus Ye Mo's trouble of cultivating himself and the small stalk of the only Spirit Herb for 50 thousand Li (1 Li = 0.5 KM) begins.
That said, why an apartment building and also skipping him finding the Herb? That Herb is linked to the plot, plus there's also supposed to be a stump in the yard where he hollowed out to cultivate in, making people misunderstand his relationship with his "wife", while the wife assumed the neighbor to be Ye Mo's lover and was sleeping there with her and only found out he was sleeping in the stump after 2 months or so later.
