a much easier way to tell would just be by smelling their breath. diabetics in DKA or HHS (both of which cause diabetic coma) typically present with sweet smelling breath due to the build up of ketones as a result of lipid metabolism because of their impaired glucose metabolism. this smell is detectable by humans, you wouldn't need a dog to do it
