i have a feeling he lost conciousness when we saw him pick up the box in chapter 2.2? idt he lost it the moment he stepped in and started hearing voices

Yeah most likely he was already under the doll's control the moment he heard it say "excuse me". He seemed to regain consciousness for a brief moment and proceeded to fiddle with his phone after having put down the box. And then the doll repeats its catchphrase.
