hm the fact that the mom is also a knight is a little disappointing, despite being cool, because it means that the reincarnation thing is unnecessary. could have the same story without it

This is unfortunately the case for a lot of genderswap stories like this. Their authors often do it in order to write a female protagonist without writing and actual female protagonist. To write yuri without writing actual yuri. Pretty much anything odd about the characters behavior can just be written off as "well, she was a guy previously".

Genderswap stories can be interesting but, stories like this one use it as a cheap gimmick. It draws in the crowd that usually don't like female protagonists cause they can't self insert as the mc and performs the mental gymnastics that allows them to.
