I'd agree if it wasn't the fact these 2 have some chemistry together. Seriously they had a nice conversation and the dude wasn't thinking about romancing her in the slightest. He also didn't help her of his own volition expecting anything from her he did it because an old classmate asked him to. Let's not forget she's kinda inconveniencing him by using him to stave off an annoying co-worker. Dude wasn't expecting anything from her despite all of that.

If this was "nice guy" fantasy the story would've gone very different. For one he would've approached those guys head on instead covertly.
