Speculating here but I wonder if there's not some stigma about hooking up with people you meet out at bars. Everything else seems have to have some kind of innate shame built in our wouldn't shock me there's something about that too.

It gets to be less of an issue the older you get. People tend to look at a 21-31 pairing with a bit of judgement, though not near as much as an 18-28 pairing.
Once the younger party's 30, most people just shrug and move on instead of judging.

I'm one of those people.

It's her own fault. She's highlighted the age gap and made him mindful of it. "When you were in high school, I'd still have been in elementary" is a good way to make someone a little weirded out about a romantic encounter.
