You underestimate people who think animals, specifically pets, can do no wrong. Someone said it already, white women and dogs a tale almost as old as the internet.
Further than that and on a more character driven note. She mentions pretty clearly that her father and her Taika are the only individuals she loves. She has just lost one, POTENTIALLY at the hands of the other. She doesn't want to lose the only other person she loves, even if he's done wrong. It's the same as mothers covering up for their child murdering their (non abusive) father; You love this person so much that you don't want them to go, even at the risk of putting your own life and morality on the line. Love and Hate are two sides of the same coin, being the most passionate emotions, which can lead to people doing stupid things.
It'll be up to Paru to sell Ao's motivations as something we, the audience, should care for. The pacing is honestly already a bit wonky, but I'm ready ta give it a chance!
