I think that instance happens usually, if not only, the victim has lived with the abuser and their manipulative actions in a long enough time where feelings of 'love' somehow sprout in their relationship.

Lily ran away from Thomas soon after receiving her eye injury, seeing him as a great threat to her own life. If she had that much sense to distinguish him as a threat then, it would be near impossible for her to develop feelings for him after that.
