For those not familiar: Edogawa Ranpo is one of the major mystery writers from Japan, his works also inspired the ongoing Meitantei Conan manga, including giving half of the MC's psuedonim "Edogawa Conan."

... and possibly also inspiring
Metallica's "One", if his "Catepillar" story had any influence on it's creation or "Johnny Got His Gun". Which doesn't seem like a stretch;
but is by no means a certainty...

Regarding this work specifically, I'd say the ending
is actually rather open ended. The couple had already faked a kidnapping, so it's reasonable to think they could have faked their death too. Or they could have been found, or it could be exactly how "Ranpo" described it... but Momoyama seems to be looking down on Ranpo's early works as "too easy to figure out." Then again, he was also surprised/disappointed by Tachiyama's loss... nothing is spelled out, and the context and be interpreted different ways. This makes it relatively interesting in a way. If the reader wants it to be.

this story feels like episode or ova of mystery solving anime series. No explanation needed, just random day of life. But not in the way kyoko okazaki does, but in more of an episodic way, even tho there is only one episode lol. I kinda like it tho ngl.

Also I like how tho smart and talented he socks at college. Kinda makes me feel better about graduating from college a year late lol
