Sawada stepping up the language, now thats some real progression. before he was kinda light with how he spoke to her, now he is saying things like what a real sadist would say during a session. also the surprise tie around the neck is also real progression. he is a fucking natural, and their chemistry is so perfect she went full yandere. i really hope we get more actual progression as we go into chapter 100. if i remember correctly we have not met his parents, nor her father but we did get a glimps of her mother and grandmother.

I've seen it mentioned in other S&M manga though. It's probably just not mentioned in fictional scenarios most of the time.

Two factors. First this is manga, of course there won't be safewords, he knows exactly what she wants and how much because its fiction.
Second, there is much less use of safewords because of japanese social interactions. The safeword is basically extremely firm "NO ACTUALLY STOP THAT" which will shock the average Japanese into halting whatever they are doing and shrink back.
To paraphrase a friend who lived in japan a number of years "If she's doing more than laying there making more sound than little moans you're either doing something very right or very wrong".
I think there is trust at least. I've heard that the Japanese SM scene doesnt even use safe words and operate on vibes, but that it works because people are very conscious of each other. Dont quote me on that tho. It seems insane to me, but cultures are different.
In the case of this relationship, I think that they are depicted to be very in sync with each other and that this is their source of trust. Nonetheless, I agree that this series has gone away from the mostly grounded start of them discovering themselves and doing somewhat taboo stuff in public spaces to making a full on routine of it, and fantasizing about punching lol.
I guess that's fine, the author wants to write what seems to be more of a fantasy for herself than something more grounded. But it takes some adjusting for me as a reader lmao. I guess it's been like this for a lot of chapters, though. Still, I think that when it comes to SM depicted in manga, this is still one of the more balanced and wholesome depictions.
It exists as a concept, but I hear that they dont adhere to it as strictly, as in it isnt as commonly used or required by the community. They basically opt for more of a vibes based thing built on how japanese culture in general works, as the commenter above mentioned a hard "No" sends a strong message to a japanese person who tends to be pretty conscientious, culturally.
