@Qelix In most relay races, you're not supposed to run back to your teammate — there's a point you're not allowed to cross, and your teammate has to get the baton to that point and hand it off to you before you can move. (You also can't throw the baton.) He probably can't run back to catch her without forfeiting the race, and that would invalidate all the effort she just put into it.
