Really unnecessary to make him super OP, considering his goofy and self-observing personality.
It would be okay if he was a scrub, and slowly learnt magic, as a scrub. He's so excited and happy to be there, that it trumps any sort of OPMC tropes that are usually being used to make bland characters seem exciting.
Making this guy OP is like putting more toppings on a pizza that is already full :v ...
